The Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU) Inter-Tribal Sports Meet 2025 got underway on Friday under the theme “Harmony Through Sports”, at multidisciplinary sports complex, Dimapur.
Personal Secretary to the Chief Minister, Government of Nagaland, Yupangnenla Longkumer, graced the opening ceremony as the special guest.
Longkumer emphasized that sports serve as a universal language from global stages like the FIFA World Cup to small village tournaments, bringing people together regardless of background.
She stressed that while Nagaland is home to diverse communities with differing views and occasional disagreements, the sports field remains a rare neutral space where differences fade and unity prevails.
Using the example of state-level players wearing the Nagaland jersey, she highlighted how athletes never question each other’s tribe or background but focus on teamwork and excellence. She urged society to reflect on and recreate such unity beyond sports arenas.
Longkumer also cautioned against rising negativity and divisiveness, particularly on social media. She urged individuals to refrain from giving tribal colour to every incident, noting that careless online comments can damage communities and remain archived for years.
In this digital age, she reminded leaders and youth alike to be mindful of the legacy they leave behind.
Calling for “baby steps” toward positive change, she encouraged Nagas to appreciate small acts of kindness, avoid finger-pointing, and start societal transformation at the individual level, “from our homes, our words and our daily choices.”
She concluded by urging participants and citizens to “wear our common jersey,” rise above tribalism and work collectively toward progress. “Only in unity,” she said, “can we overcome barriers and move forward as one people.”
At the programme, welcome address was delivered by DNSU president Hinoto P Aomi, invocation prayer was offered by Calvary Baptist Church pastor Neikhollie Wetsah and special song was presented by Tajumenla Pongen.
Oath taking was administered by DNSU games and sports secretary, Tsuktilong Jamir. The sports events include volleyball, penalty shoot-out and tug of war for both male and female and football for men.
The event will culminate on November 22, with Depputy Commissioner Dimapur Dr. Tinojongshi Chang as special guest.
