The Phom Baptist Christian Association (PBCA) has reaffirmed support for the Nagaland Baptist Church Council’s opposition to repealing the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition Act(NTLP)Act, 1989.
According to PBCA executive secretary N. Tialemba Phom, the resolution was adopted at the 72nd general executive and central council held at its headquarters Mission Centre Nyengchingkong, Longleng from November 13-16, which reflected commitment to Christian faith and a peaceful, sober society.
PBCA reaffirmed that churches regard the NTLP Act as a “Covenant between God and the Naga people.” While noting varied perspectives, PBCA said the law embodies divine providence and biblical values of purity and self control.
PBCA stressed that prohibiting liquor consumption, sale, import, manufacture and production reflects Naga commitment to faith and living by Christian principles.
Further, PBCA said the NTLP Act 1989, was enacted through the wise leadership of NBCC and Naga Mothers’ Association(NMA), backed by prayer and fasting. PBCA urged government, bureaucrats and civil society to view the law with moral and spiritual discernment. It also stressed churches were not blindly supportive, citing studies showing alcohol has brought no positive contribution to society.
PBCA said alcohol’s negative impact extends beyond individuals to families and society. It cited the NLTP Act’s role in reducing crime, alcohol fuelled violence and disorder, while improving public health through lower rates of related illness.
PBCA added that prohibition has strengthened social stability by curbing domestic violence and disturbances, and expressed confidence it could also reduce accident cases.
