Along with the rest of the country, Nagaland observed the 76th Constitution Day on November 26, 2025, with programmes held at Directorate of Information & Public Relations (DIPR), Nagaland University, Kohima District Legal Services Authority (KDLSA) and Government High School (GHS) Padumpukhuri, Dimapur on November 25.
DIPR & Nagaland University: At DIPR Kohima, officers and staff took the pledge administered by Additional Director, Er. Kevizayieno. Nagaland University’s Departments of Political Science and Law jointly organised the celebration. Chairperson Dr. Neizhanou Golmei stressed the importance of the day, while Prof. Dasarathi Bhuyan, HoD Political Science, explained how Constitution Day replaced National Law Day in 2015 to honour the vision of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and the framers.
Faculty members recited the pledge in English and Hindi, followed by an audio-video rendition of the Preamble. Dr. Likhase Sangtam, Associate Professor, Political Science, underscored the Constitution’s role in uniting the nation and empowering citizens. Chief guest and VC in-charge, Prof. Mithilesh Kumar Sinha, paid tribute to the Constituent Assembly members and reminded that fundamental duties must accompany fundamental rights. Prof. Yugal Kishore from National University of Study and Research in Law, Ranchi, delivered a lecture describing the Preamble as a living document guiding the nation’s destiny.
KDLSA: Kohima District Legal Services Authority (KDLSA) in collaboration with Kohima Bar Association (KBA) and Prosecution observed the day at DPDB Hall, Kohima. Justice Songkhupchung Serto, chairperson, Nagaland State Human Rights Commission (NSHRC) and retired judge of Gauhati High Court graced the programme as Chief Guest.
In his address, Justice Serto reminded that the Constitution is not merely a document but a living, evolving entity embodying the dreams and aspirations of the forefathers. He noted that India has witnessed remarkable progress in the last 76 years, guided by the Constitution which has undergone 106 amendments, the latest being the 106th Amendment Act, 2023 providing one-third reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies.
Delivering the keynote address, Mezivolu T. Therieh, chairperson, Kohima DLSA, said the day marks an important occasion for the legal fraternity who are custodians of justice. She emphasized that the framers of the Constitution entrusted them with a sacred responsibility to deliver justice, uphold constitutional morality and protect the rights of the weak.
Additional Public Prosecutor Abraham described the Constitution as both a daily tool and a weapon, stressing that constitutional governance depends on collective effort within the justice system. He urged all to recommit to its principles.
Secretary of KBA, Lhusisato Iralu, in his speech, underlined the importance of institutions and the rule of law as a discipline and necessity. Earlier, the programme began with a welcome address by Nagali Shohe, advocate and Panel Lawyer, KDLSA, followed by collective recitation of the Preamble.
GHS Padumpukhuri, Dimapur: Government High School Padumpukhuri observed Samvidhan Divas under the nationwide campaign “Hamara Samvidhan, Hamara Swabhiman.” Sixty students participated in reading the Preamble, fostering patriotism and awareness of India’s core values. Teachers and students discussed the Constitution’s importance and relevance, while students were encouraged to share videos reading the Preamble.
