DNSU demands revisit of Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition Act 1989

The Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU) reaffirmed its call to revisit the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition Act, urging collective honesty, responsibility, and courage to confront pressing social realities in the State.
DNSU highlighted that while the NLTP Act sought to curb alcohol misuse, it has instead fueled illegal trade and worsened substance abuse.
It cited recent report of surveys that revealed 6,24,000 users, including 1,11,000 children and 26,000 women. DNSU warned against societal hypocrisy with NLTP Act which has led some 1.2 lakh drug users consuming over 20,000 kg of heroin and synthetic substances annually.
DNSU emphasized that proper guidelines, practical frameworks, and sound governance are vital to address challenges effectively.
It urged a regulated, transparent approach with accountability, awareness, counseling, and rehabilitation, while calling stakeholders to engage in honest dialogue for reforms prioritizing Nagaland’s welfare.
