Nagaland: BWS condemns brutal killing; demands justice

Dimapur

Bodo Welfare Society (BWS), Dimapur, has strongly condemned the brutal killing of Deep Basumatary, a 46-year-old resident of Assam, who reportedly succumbed to fatal injuries at Yeshu Arms Wellness Foundation rehabilitation centre, Chekiye village, Chümoukedima.
In a press release, BWS president, Ptitiraj Narzary and general secretary, Gamalel Narzary, quoting reports, said that Basumatary sustained multiple bruises on his limbs, buttocks, legs, left cheek and hand, raising serious suspicion that he was mercilessly beaten to death inside the facility meant to provide care and recovery.
The society acknowledged Diphupar Police Station for arresting five individuals, including the owner of the rehabilitation centre.
The society said it has also taken note of the post-mortem being conducted at Dimapur District Hospital, while investigations into the centre’s licensing, operational practices and medical staffing are underway.
The Bodo Welfare Society asserted that the incident cannot be treated as isolated, but reflects systemic lapses in oversight and accountability of rehabilitation centres in the region.
Therefore, BWS demanded a thorough, impartial and time-bound investigation by Nagaland Police, exemplary punishment under relevant laws for all persons involved, immediate suspension of the centre’s license pending compliance audit, wider inspection of rehabilitation centres across Chümoukedima and adjoining districts and adequate compensation and support for the bereaved family.
Expressing solidarity with the family of the deceased, the Society termed the act a gross violation of human rights and dignity. It urged authorities to ensure swift and transparent justice, while calling upon community leaders, civil society organisations and the public to unite in condemning the incident and preventing similar tragedies.
