Stewards of Intanki (Youth Organisation of Intanki National Park comprising 18 fringed villages) have issued a public circular strictly prohibiting illegal hunting and poaching in Intanki National Park and adjoining areas.
In a press release, SoI president, Amangbo Ngame and general secretary Ingambe, said that it has come to notice that individuals and groups from outside Peren district have been entering the park for hunting and poaching. SoI said such activities, are illegal, environmentally destructive and a direct violation of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, as well as community regulations established to safeguard natural heritage.
Therefore, SoI has prohibited entry into the National Park for picnic, hunting or poaching, or possession of wildlife-related weapons and equipment. Outsiders are barred from entering forest areas without prior authorisation from competent authorities. It warned that anyone found engaging in hunting, poaching, wildlife trafficking or aiding such activities will face strict legal action under relevant sections of the WPA 1972 and other applicable laws. Village authorities, local volunteers and community patrolling units have been urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious movement or illegal activity immediately. Transportation of wild animals, animal products, bush meat or forest-derived materials from the vicinity of Intanki National Park has also been banned.
SoI emphasised that the park was not only a sanctuary for rich biodiversity but also a symbol of community responsibility towards conservation. For information or reporting of illegal activities, the public have been asked to SoI at 7630923538 or the Assistant Conservator of Forest at 8787602360.
