Nagaland: Hornbill extension celebrated at Doyang

The third edition of the Hornbill Extension was celebrated on December 5 at the Doyang tourist resort in Wokha district, with Executive Director (Technical) and HoP, DHEP NEEPCo/NTPC Ltd., Er. CH R John Zeliang, gracing the event as guest of honour.
The opening day showcased traditional boat racing in single and double categories, a 50-metre freestyle swimming competition, and a men’s tug-of-war (8×8), followed by a musical evening.
Addressing the gathering, Zeliang highlighted tourism as a major economic avenue for Wokha alongside power generation. He lamented that the quality of hospitality and services offered to visitors would determine tourism success, noting that even a family providing a hygienic homestay could generate substantial income.
Reflecting on cultural practices, he voiced concern over eroding values of trust, loyalty, and honesty, while urging communities to uphold authentic traditions with an accommodative spirit for collective development.
Deputy Director for Tourism, Lichumo Kikon, reiterated the government’s commitment to developing tourism as a sustainable industry, creating opportunities and strengthening Nagaland’s economy. He appealed for community participation through skill learning and improved hospitality, while highlighting various government visions and initiatives in the sector.
Earlier in his welcome address, Chief of Team Metamorphosis, Dr. Thungdemo Kyong thanked the department for its support and expressed gratitude for the confidence reposed in the association, which has successfully hosted three events at Doyang. He assured continued efforts to promote tourism with wider public participation.
President of the Land Owners Union (LOU), Doyang, Roland Lotha, pledged support for tourism-driven initiatives, noting Doyang’s potential not only in power generation and fishing but also as a thriving tourist destination. He lauded NEEPCO for job creation, livelihood assistance and enhancing recreational potential, while encouraging youth to develop innovative activities to harness tourism opportunities.
In the tug-of-war, Midland Colony, Wokha secured first place, followed by Doyang Lion in second place, and Just for Fun as the second runners-up.
In freestyle swimming, Pitor emerged as the winner, with Nongothung taking first runners-up and Ronsuthung placing as second runners-up.
In the double boat racing event, Lawrence and Zaremo claimed the top spot, Njamo Odyuo and Tumbemo finished as first runners-up, and Chichamo and Lumchamo took second runners-up.
