Nagaland: Gandhi Shilp Bazar inaugurated in Kohima

DIMAPUR

The week-long Gandhi Shilp Bazar (District) under the National Handicrafts Development Program (NHDP), ministry of textiles, government of India, was inaugurated at The Heritage, Lok Bhawan, Kohima on December 2.
Organized by the Handicraft Service Centre, Kohima, the event brings together 40 artisans from across the North Eastern states to showcase diverse handicraft traditions. The Gandhi Shilp Bazar will remain open to the public from December 2 to 8, daily from 10:00 am to 7:30 PM, offering visitors the chance to interact with artisans and support handmade products
The event aimed to provide artisans with a direct marketing platform, promote traditional art forms and cultural identity, create awareness among buyers about authentic handmade products, and encourage young talents to take pride in traditional crafts.
The inauguration ceremony was graced by chief guest, additional director, industries & commerce department and managing director, NHHDC, Lipongse Thongtsar, guest of honour, National Merit Certificate Awardee, state awardee, DC (handicrafts), James Lotha, guest of esteem, state awardee, DC (handicrafts), K. Nzano Ngullie, and special guest, chairperson, Ura Zuba Foundation, Phek, Vekho Pringa.
The chief guest lit the ceremonial lamp, which was followed by an address highlighting the importance of supporting traditional artisans, strengthening the handicraft sector, and creating livelihood opportunities through market linkages, innovation, design and entrepreneurship. This year’s exhibition features bamboo products, wood carving, handloom textiles, tribal jewelry, natural fiber craft, pottery, cane craft, weaving, and other indigenous handmade items unique to Northeast India. A cultural performance by local artists added vibrancy to the inaugural programme.
