Nagaland: PBCC reaffirms strong support for NLTP Act

DIMAPUR, DEC 8 (NPN)

Pochury Baptist Church Council (PBCC), at its Annual Council Meet held at Pochury Baptist Church, Chümoukedima from December 5–7, 2025, reiterated its unwavering support for the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition (NLTP) Act and reaffirmed its alignment with the Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) in opposing any move to repeal or dilute the Act.
PBCC stated that alcohol abuse remains one of the gravest social, moral and spiritual threats in society, with churches, families and communities witnessing the harmful effects—broken homes, domestic violence, poverty, crime, accidents, health issues and moral decline. The NLTP Act, it said, was enacted as a protective measure rooted in public welfare and moral responsibility. In a press note issued through its executive secretary Rev. Rümatho Nyusou, PBCC cautioned that lifting the Act would further weaken the already fragile social fabric, endanger lives and undermine family and community well-being.
It maintained that economic arguments for revenue generation cannot outweigh the value of human life, dignity and moral responsibility, and that economic gains at the cost of social destruction are neither sustainable nor justifiable.
Acknowledging implementation challenges, PBCC asserted that the fault lies not with the Act but with weak enforcement and lack of collective accountability. It urged the State government to strengthen enforcement, intensify vigilance, curb illegal liquor trade and hold violators accountable without fear or favour. PBCC said that as a Christian body guided by biblical values of righteousness, self-control and concern for the vulnerable, it remains committed to safeguarding the moral, spiritual and social health of the people. It called upon policymakers, civil society organisations, tribal bodies and citizens to uphold the spirit and purpose of the NLTP Act.
Reaffirming its stand with the NBCC, PBCC appealed to the State government not to lift the NLTP Act but to ensure its strict and sincere implementation for the greater good of society.
