Kuda Village Council (KVC), Dimapur, has appealed to the Deputy Commissioner, Dimapur, to revive and re-impose the ban on bursting of firecrackers and fireworks during festivals including Christmas, New Year, Diwali and other occasions. In its representation, KVC chairman Vikie Nagi, highlighted the negative impact of firecrackers on senior citizens, infants, children, the sick and bed-ridden, as well as domestic pets, poultry and cattle.
It stated that the momentary excitement of bursting crackers leaves behind long-term trauma for vulnerable citizens, while toxic fumes pose serious health hazards through air pollution. The council pointed out that neither Christmas, New Year nor Diwali have any tradition mandating the use of crackers, and their absence does not diminish the joy of celebrations. “Christmas is the epitome of quiet and peace, New Year celebrations are virtually silent, and Diwali is a festival of lights,” the council noted. KVC suggested that if the use of crackers was deemed essential, designated zones outside urban and suburban areas could be created, far from hospitals, nursing homes, churches, hostels and densely populated habitations, with deterrent penalties for violators. It further informed that Kuda village had already resolved to ban the sale and bursting of crackers within its jurisdiction to maintain peace and tranquility during festivals. The council once again appealed to the DC to consider a permanent ban on firecrackers in the interest of public health and safety.
