Need to expand Naga products: Hekani

Staff ReporterDIMAPUR, DEC 9 (NPN)

Advisor for Industries & Commerce, Hekani Jakhalu, on Tuesday called upon Naga weavers to continue nurturing their craft and preserve tradition while stressing the need for local products to reach markets beyond villages and the state.
Speaking as special guest on the second day of the 11th Naga Loinloom Festival at Diezephe village, Chumoukedima, organized by Exotic Echo Society, Hekani said, “We wear our own products in Nagaland, but it has to go beyond. That is how we can earn a livelihood and uplift the state’s economy.”
Underscoring the significance of the festival, she described it as “not just a day but an important programme,” and expressed gratitude for being part of the event.
Explaining the role of the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), she informed that eight high-level task forces represent each Northeastern state across sectors such as sports, investment, livestock, handicrafts and others, with the respective Chief Ministers as convenors. For Nagaland, she said, the Chief Minister heads the task force on handicrafts and handloom.
Highlighting the state’s commitment, Hekani said the Department of Industries & Commerce, supported by experts and professionals, was engaged in advancing the sector through skills and knowledge rather than financial assistance. “These days there is no free money,” she remarked, emphasizing capacity-based support.
She acknowledged challenges such as production of exotic items without adequate market linkage but assured that the department was taking steady steps to address these gaps. Expressing concern over the growing use of non-biodegradable and synthetic materials, she called for focus on natural fibres and dyeing, noting that Eri silk was performing well and remained a unique asset of the Northeast.
Hekani further committed that the next Loinloom Festival would be discussed with and supported by the Department of Industries & Commerce to strengthen and promote the event. She reiterated that while new programmes may emerge, “there is no free assistance,” and assured proper implementation. Advancing the handloom and handicraft sector, she affirmed, remained her mission and vision.
The programme was chaired by Exotic Echo Society secretary Lucy Semy Seb, with invocation by Chakhesang Baptist Church women pastor Lyn Lohe. Speeches were also delivered by Nagaland Women Hoho president Imlinungla and NHDC Dimapur coordinator Ekonthung Tsanglao.
Highlights of the festival included cultural presentations, competitions with cash awards, a weavers’ dialogue on “Preserving Naga Heritage: The Art of Loinloom Weaving,” live demonstrations, and product display sales.
