The Liangmai Naga Council (LNC-M) Working Committee has called for urgent justice after alleging that miscreants devastated Liangmai Marenmei village in Kangpokpi district, destroying more than 370 houses and looting livestock, church properties and community storage facilities.
In a statement issued Thursday, the committee said an official visit conducted on December 7 alongside Liangmai leaders confirmed the large-scale destruction. The estimated loss is pegged at around Rs. 6 crore, with displaced villagers currently taking shelter in relief camps.
According to the committee, villagers were forcibly coerced and evacuated, with men allegedly manhandled and brutally beaten, while women were spared. The LNC-M further alleged that the attack was carried out under the instructions of one Achan, former EO of the Maramthangal CAA, GPRN.
With Christmas approaching, the committee expressed anguish that the people of Marenmei cannot return to their ancestral homes to celebrate in safety. Declaring that “no amicable solution is in sight,” the LNC-M issued urgent appeals for recognition of rightful ownership and full compensation for the destruction and displacement.
“All land, hills, rivers, and mountains in the Naga Hills belong to their rightful community or clan. No individual has the authority to seize land or alter its traditional name for personal gain,” the statement asserted.
The committee urged respect for customary law and peaceful coexistence, emphasizing that only dialogue and lawful processes can bring lasting peace. It called upon authorities, civil society groups, and stakeholders to intervene urgently to restore peace, dignity, and lawful ownership to the rightful inhabitants of Marenmei.
The statement, jointly signed by LNC-M convener Ch Wisobou and secretary Ch Benwangbo, reaffirmed the council’s commitment to securing justice for the displaced villagers and was issued “in good faith for public awareness and justice.”
