The Chümoukedima Town Council (CTC) has announced a ban on the sale and use of firecrackers and single-use plastics within its jurisdiction. The decision was taken in view of the risks posed by firecrackers and the adverse impact of plastics on the environment, air quality, and public health.
A press release by CTC stated that to ensure compliance, regular checks and patrols will be conducted, and violators will face fines and penalties. The Council has urged residents to celebrate in safe and eco-friendly ways, by exploring alternatives, such as lighting lamps, participating in cultural events, or spending quality time with loved ones.
Further, all ward GBs / chairmen are directed to disseminate this information widely and ensure public involvement and participation in making Chumoukedima Town free from single-use plastics and pollution. They are further instructed to strictly enforce the ban on firecrackers within their respective wards and colonies.
