GUWAHATI, DEC 20 (PTI)

Train movement in Assam was disrupted on Saturday after seven elephants were killed and one injured when a herd was hit by the Sairang–New Delhi Rajdhani Express in Hojai district early in the morning, officials said.
Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) spokesperson Kapinjal Kishore Sharma said five coaches and the engine of the train were derailed, though no passengers were injured. “Due to the derailment in the Jamunamukh–Kampur section under Lumding division, train movement on the Lumding–Guwahati down line has been affected,” he added.
Nine trains have been cancelled, 13 regulated, and two short-terminated following the accident.
Cancelled trains include Rangiya–New Tinsukia Express, Guwahati–Jorhat Town Jan Shatabdi Express, Guwahati–Badarpur Vistadome Express, and New Tinsukia–Rangiya Express. Train No. 15769 (Alipurduar–Mariani) will be short-terminated at Digaru and will remain cancelled between Digaru–Mariani.
Train No. 15770 (Mariani–Alipurduar) will be short-originated from Digaru and remain cancelled between Mariani–Digaru.
Regulated trains include Sealdah–Sabroom Kanchanjunga Express, Dibrugarh–New Delhi Rajdhani Express, Dibrugarh–Kanyakumari Vivek Express, and New Tinsukia–SMVT Bengaluru Express.
Sharma said the NFR general manager and senior officials are at the site overseeing restoration work.
