Hectic preparations are underway for the 67th Kohima Village Sports Association (KVSA) Meet, scheduled to be held from January 10 to January 16 across various locations in Kohima.
The biennial sports meet will be organised at six venues—Khuochiezie, Kewhimia Indoor Stadium (Ziekezou), Indira Gandhi Stadium, Meriema Village Ground and Don Bosco Higher Secondary School Ground.
A total of 134 medals, comprising 53 gold, 53 silver and 28 bronze, will be contested across 30 disciplines, including 17 athletics events and 13 games events.
This year’s theme, “Kevimerü,” coined by Medoselhou Keretsü, reflects an invocation of good tidings for Kohima Village, which has remained united since its inception. The theme underscores the shared goals, interests, vision and sense of love among the four khels, rooted deeply in collective wellbeing. It also conveyed the village’s aspiration to uphold goodness and righteousness while actively resisting injustice and opposing evil.
The mascot for the 67th edition is the Great Indian Barbet, designed by Kikrulelie Suohu. Known for its vibrant colours and distinctive call, the bird symbolises energy, resilience and harmony with nature. Commonly found in the forests surrounding Kohima, the barbet represents the close connection between sports, the environment and community life. Just as the bird’s call resonates across the hills, the KVSA Meet seeks to bring together athletes and spectators in a spirit of unity, strength and celebration of local identity.
Around 700 athletes, along with coaches and management teams from the four khels, are expected to participate in the six-day event.
The inaugural programme will be held on January 10, with advisor for School Education and SCERT Dr. Kekhrielhoulie Yhome serving as the chief host, while Dr. Tseilhoutuo Rhütso, MLA of 9th Kohima Town Assembly Constituency, will be the guest of honour.
One of the major highlights of the opening day will be a special relay race featuring veteran athletes from each khel, comprising former champions in their respective disciplines.
