The inaugural Lt. Toshi Wungtong Memorial Football Tournament commenced on Thursday as part of the 60th Yimkhiung Akherü Arihako (YAA) General Session, with the first semi-final match played between Old Showuba Village Students’ Union and Shiponger Village Students’ Union.
According to a DIPR report, the opening programme was graced by Advisor for Youth Resources and Sports and Chairman of DPDB Shamator, S. Keoshu Yimchunger, who attended as the special guest. In his address, Yimchunger urged the youth to remain self-disciplined, hardworking and humble, while placing God at the center of their pursuits. He highlighted the vision of Viksit Bharat, which seeks to transform India into a global powerhouse in sports and talent and emphasized that Nagaland’s youth possess immense raw potential across various disciplines.
Expressing gratitude to the family of Lt. Toshi Wungtong and the YAA for organizing the tournament, Yimchunger lauded their efforts to uplift young talents and extended his best wishes to all the finalists.
Joint secretary of the Nagaland Football Association (NFA), L. Shahoto Yimchunger and Dokiu Kecham, brother of the late Lt. Toshi Wungtong, also addressed the gathering, encouraging the players and participants.
The programme was chaired by Kumlumong Akum and Shihtsangla, with a welcome address delivered by games and sports secretary of YAA, J. Lunsokhiung. The invocation was led by Catechist of St. Xavier Parish Shamator, Martin, while Amon R. presented a special number.
The event concluded with the ceremonial kick-off and decoration of the finalists by the special guest, marking a significant beginning to the memorial tournament dedicated to the legacy of Lt. Toshi Wungtong.
