Nagaland State Basketball Team has scripted history by qualifying for the Knock Out Stage of the 75th Senior National Basketball Championship held in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, from January 4–11, 2026. This marks the first time Nagaland has advanced from Level 2 to Level 1, a landmark achievement showcasing the team’s resilience and determination.
In their journey through Group G, placed in Level 2 Group G alongside Assam, Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Sikkim, Nagaland displayed steady improvement across matches. In Match 1, Nagaland lost narrowly to Assam 41–50, with Benhilo scoring 15 points. In Match 2, Nagaland dominated Andaman 60–23, led by Cuwe Mero with 22 points. In Match 3, Nagaland defeated Sikkim 55–27, with Mero again leading with 14 points.
In the crucial Knock Out Qualifying Game 1 on January 7, Nagaland overcame Meghalaya 53–39, with standout performances from Cuwe Mero (17 points) and Nukshizulu (9 points). The victory secured Nagaland’s historic promotion bid.
Facing West Bengal in the second Knock Out Qualifying Game on January 8, Nagaland fought valiantly but fell 81–39. Despite the loss, the team’s spirited run remains a proud milestone for the state.
Cuwe Mero emerged as the backbone of Nagaland’s offense, delivering consistent scoring and leadership throughout the championship. His performances inspired teammates and elevated the team’s confidence, positioning him as one of the most promising talents in Indian basketball.
Honorary Secretary of the Nagaland Basketball Association (NBA), Sentiningsang Longkumer, hailed the achievement as historic. “Nagaland’s qualification to the Knock Out Stage reflects the resilience and determination of our players. Cuwe Mero’s outstanding performances have inspired the team and shown the immense talent our state possesses. This success is proof that with proper support, our athletes can shine on the national stage,” he said, urging greater government investment in sports infrastructure, training, and opportunities.
