ICAR-NMRI promotes meat processing entrepreneurship in Nagaland

Recognising the high demand for meat in North-East India, which accounts for nearly 9% of the country’s total consumption despite comprising only 4% of the population, the ICAR–National Meat Research Institute (NMRI), Hyderabad, has been actively promoting livestock enterprises and meat processing entrepreneurship in the region.
As part of this initiative, ICAR-NMRI organised a training programme on meat processing and entrepreneurship development opportunities on January 14, in collaboration with the Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services, Dimapur.
The programme was attended by over 45 livestock farmers and aspiring entrepreneurs. Principal Scientist, Dr. Suresh Devatkal, conducted the training, highlighting the vast scope for entrepreneurship in meat processing and the institute’s role in supporting such ventures.
Lectures on pig farming and pork production were delivered by Dr. Vikshe Sumi, while Dr. Michael Imti Imchen spoke on poultry farming.
The event was coordinated by Chief Veterinary Officer, Dimapur, Dr. Sentinungla Ao, along with Dr. Bocto Sumi.
Several women entrepreneurs expressed interest in meat processing and value addition ventures, while four to five young participants were identified for advanced training. Short addresses were also delivered by ICAR-NRC on Mithun, Jharnapani, Scientist, Dr. Sunitibala Devi, and Joint Director, Directorate of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services, Kohima, Dr. Pusazonu Chusi.
Alongside the training, participants were provided with livestock feed, medicines and utility tools.
