Advisor for Urban Development and Municipal Affairs, Zhaleo Rio, on Friday lauded the Western Yimkhiung Hoho (WYH) for reviving the Tsungkamnyo Munchi festival after a long gap, describing the initiative as a significant step in preserving and promoting cultural heritage.
Addressing the premier harvest festival of the Yimkhiung Naga tribe at Old Showuba Village Public Ground, Zhaleo expressed gratitude to God and appreciation to the organisers.
In his speech, Zhaleo said Old Showuba holds a special place in his heart as it falls under his 5 Ghaspani–II Assembly Constituency, highlighting that despite administrative boundaries, the village remains an integral part of the Naga community. Extending New Year greetings, he highlighted the cultural and agricultural significance of Tsungkamnyo, describing it as a post-harvest thanksgiving festival deeply rooted in farming traditions. Drawing parallels with the Angami Sekrenyi festival, he noted that Naga festivals are closely linked to agrarian cycles, community bonding and spiritual reflection.
He further lauded WYH for successfully organising a large gathering involving participants from Mokokchung, Wokha, Kohima, Dimapur, Chümoukedima and Niuland districts. Zhaleo expressed happiness over the vibrant display of traditional attire, folk songs and cultural performances, stating that such festivals reflect the rich cultural heritage and identity of the Naga people.
At the same time, he urged Naga youth to revive the dignity of labour and strong work culture practiced by their forefathers. Expressing concern over rising unemployment and overdependence on government jobs, he called upon families, village councils and community organisations to encourage youth to take up agriculture, allied sectors and private employment opportunities. He stressed that Nagaland, despite its small population and favourable climate, remains largely a consumer society and emphasised the need for productivity, self-reliance and hard work beginning from the family level. Representatives from Western Sumi Hoho and Chakhroma Public Organisation also attended as tribal guests.
Short speeches were delivered by presidents of Western Sumi Hoho, Western Sumi Kukami Hoho and Chakhroma Public Organisation, along with SDO (Civil) Kuhuboto, Nuhuta Tunyi. WYH president H. Akiumong highlighted the significance of Tsungkamnyo Munchi. Cultural presentations were showcased by Angopong Cultural Club, Kohima; Western Yimkhiung Students’ Union; and Rhythmic Fusion Band, Dimapur, presented a special song. The programme began with an invocation by pastor Kiujimkhiung of Loyir Baptist Church.
