Nagaland: EKU concerned over factional clashes in Eastern Naga areas

DIMAPUR, JAN 17 (NPN)

Eastern Konyak Union (EKU) has expressed deep sorrow and serious concern over the recent fighting between Naga groups on January 9 and January 12 in the Pangsaung and Nanyun areas under Khammatine village.
In a press release, EKU president PM Aman and general secretary K. Akham Howang described the incidents as “unfortunate” and said the clashes have disturbed the peaceful atmosphere in civilian areas, affecting innocent people.
EKU affirmed solidarity with the affected communities and hoped for the restoration of peaceful conditions in civilian villages. The union conveyed condolences to the bereaved families of “lieut.” Avi Pochury and “sgt.” Peyao Konyak, who lost their lives in the clashes. EKU also prayed for the speedy recovery of severely injured Naga Army personnel. Calling the loss of lives as “unfortunate”, the union appealed to both groups to restrain from retaliation in public areas and among Naga brothers.
EKU questioned why Naga national workers, who claim to fight for Naga self-determination and sovereignty, were fighting among themselves. “If we cannot unite, how can we gain sovereignty?” the union asked, adding that internal clashes weaken the Naga movement and reduce the population. EKU reminded all Naga national worker leaders to assess the movement and eliminate negative elements such as hatred, fighting, allegations, backbiting etc.
It said innocent people have suffered enough in the pursuit of Naga sovereignty.
The union appealed to Naga leaders to promote peace rather than fight one another.
It said that such actions would not bring solutions but worsen the situation in Naga soil. EKU expressed hope that Naga leaders refrain from further fighting, overcome “devil’s traps,” and work toward reconciliation across all Naga inhabited areas.
