All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretary Christopher Tilak who is also party in-charge of Manipur and Nagaland on Sunday alleged poor management of Indo-Myanmar border while reacting to recent damage of the border fencing in Manipur sector by miscreants.
Tilak arrived here in Imphal today to participate in the party’s “Save MGNREGA” (MGNREGA Bachao Sangram) campaign in the state.
He said that the state is facing border management issues amid the protracted crisis that has been besieging the state for the last nearly three years.
Frequent dismantling of the border fencing itself was the sign of not managing the international border with Myanmar effectively with responsibility, the AICC secretary told the media upon his arrival at the Imphal Airport today.
Notably, a section of border fencing along the Manipur sector of Indo-Myanmar international border in Chandel district was found damaged by miscreants reportedly in the wee hours of January 15 for the second time in less than two months.
A similar incident of dismantling the border fencing was reported on December 2, 2025.
He said that such ineffective management of the international border on the part of the BJP-led NDA government should not be taken lightly as it is a matter of security concern not only for the state of Manipur but also the nation.
“It reflects BJP-led NDA government’s dereliction in effective management of the border and the Centre irresponsibility toward the concern of the state,” he said.
He cautioned that this act clearly indicated that some people were taking undue advantage of the prevailing crisis in the state.
The AICC secretary alleged that the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre was not taking seriously the crisis besieging the state for a protracted period of time while asserting that peace and normalcy was yet to be restored in the state even after nearly a year of President’s Rule.
Tilak is on his seven-day tour in the state to participate in the party’s “Save MGNREGA” (MGNREGA Bachao Sangram) campaign under the aegis of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC).
Talking about the purpose of his visit, Tilak said, “I have come to participate in the campaign against the renaming of MGNREGA.”
He will tour across the valley and hills districts of the state to raise awareness and mobilize people against the anti-people policy of the Central government, Tilak said.
He said that the campaign sought to highlight the significance of MGNREGA in providing economic security to rural families and to protest any attempts to alter its identity or dilute its objectives.
Joining the 45-day AICC’s nationwide MGNREGA Bachao Sangram, MPCC has been organizing various events mobilizing the people against the renaming the rural job guarantee act.
The BJP-led NDA government at the Centre replaced Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) by “VB-G RAM G”, short for Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin).
