The Gorkha Youth Club Dimapur organized a tribute programme for Late Prashant Tamang on January 18, at the Gorkha Cultural Hall, Nepali Basti.
Speaking at the programme, general secretary of the Dimapur District Gorkha Indigenous Forum (DDGIF), Deepak Chetri, recalled Prashant Tamang’s journey to fame and said the singer had won hearts across the world through his talent and humility. He noted that Nagaland, particularly Dimapur, held a special place in Prashant’s life as his wife hailed from the city.
Former president, Gorkha Students Union Dimapur, Anand Gurung, spoke about how Prashant Tamang had transcended his identity as a singer or artist to become a symbol of pride for the Gorkhali people, fostering a deep connection with the community.
Gorkha elder Rin Kumar Chetri and DDGIF convenor Pushpa Sharma also expressed their condolences, remembering the late singer with mournful words. Suraj Gautam paid musical tribute by rendering Prashant Tamang’s song “Asareymaina Ma,” followed by the lighting of lamps and prayers for the eternal peace of the departed soul.
Prashant Tamang, a noted singer and actor, rose to national fame after winning Season 3 of Indian Idol in 2007 and enjoyed a massive following, especially among the Gorkha community worldwide. His sudden demise on January 11 has left admirers and well-wishers deeply saddened.
