Nagaland: First Late A. Oditenba Phom Memorial Badminton Trophy begins in Yachem

DIMAPUR, JAN 20 (NPN)

The first edition of the Late A. Oditenba Phom, Ex-MLA, Memorial Badminton Trophy 2026 commenced on Tuesday at the Indoor Badminton Hall, Yachem, organized by the Yachem Students’ Union in collaboration with the family of the late leader.
Gracing the inaugural session as special guest, Project Director DRDA Longleng, Er. Atu Imsong, emphasized the importance of sportsmanship and urged village elders and the student community to adopt the spirit of love and unity.
He called upon participants to reject hatred and jealousy, stressing that coordination and understanding among peers and leaders is the key to success. He was accompanied by officers and staff from DRDA, Longleng.
The memorial trophy, the first of its kind in Longleng district, aims to honor the legacy of Late A. Oditenba Phom, Ex-MLA, while fostering the development of upcoming athletes. The tournament provides young players with a platform to showcase their skills, gain recognition and receive exposure to higher levels of competition. It also seeks to promote unity and social harmony by bringing together diverse communities.
Born on April 8, 1931, at Yachem Village, Late A. Oditenba Phom was a pioneering political leader and the first MLA from the Phom tribe, elected in 1969. Known for his wisdom, integrity and dedication to public service, he worked tirelessly for development, justice, education and good governance. He passed away on July 17, 2017, leaving behind a lasting impact on the Phom community and Nagaland at large.
The inaugural programme featured invocation by associate pastor for Women YBA, H. Hongla, and an opening address by chairman of the Organising Committee, Manchong Phom. A message from the sponsor’s family was delivered by C. Akokla Phom, wife of the late leader, while short speeches were given by representatives of Yachem Village Council and Yaongyimchen Village Council. A special song was presented by P. S. Anyak and Kongmei.
The Yachem Students’ Union, on behalf of the citizens of Yachem Village, expressed profound respect and homage to Late A. Oditenba Phom, pledging to continue remembering his selfless service and principled leadership through this memorial event.
