Nagaland: Book talk with journalist Ushinor Majumdar in Dimapur

Dimapur

A book talk featuring Indian investigative journalist and author Ushinor Majumdar was held at Butter Book Café, Dimapur, on January 24. The programme was organised by The Creative Tribe Nagaland, a collective of professionals connecting through art and dialogue. Majumdar, author of India’s Secret War, spoke on revisiting history through the lens of the Border Security Force (BSF) and its covert role during the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War.
The book documents BSF operations during the nine months leading up to the war, highlighting humanitarian responses amid widespread violence in then East Pakistan. Sharing insights into his research process, Majumdar said the work involved interviews with veterans, access to archival records, and the use of creative non-fiction to reconstruct historical events. He also underlined the role of ordinary individuals—farmers, students, teachers and civilians—in the liberation movement alongside trained forces, while reflecting on the humanitarian crisis that led to large-scale displacement into India’s north-eastern states. The discussion further touched upon the importance of language in the Bangladesh movement, particularly the 1952 Language Movement, and the role of radio broadcasts in mobilising resistance during the war.The session was moderated by Moabenla, Assistant Professor at New Life Bible College.
