The 111th birth anniversary of Rani Gaidinliu, legendary freedom fighter and revered Naga spiritual leader, was observed in Delhi and Dimapur with programmes honouring her life, struggle and enduring legacy.
In Delhi, the event was organised by Zeliangrong Welfare Association Delhi (ZWAD) and Zeliangrong Student Union Delhi (ZSUD) in collaboration with My Home India on January 27, 2026. Trustee of My Home India, Santlal Yadav, graced the programme as chief guest, while social worker Mathiupuang Gommei served as resource person.
The programme began with floral tributes and candle lighting in honour of Rani Gaidinliu. In his address, Gommei recalled her resistance against British rule and her vision for a unified administrative unit for the Zeliangrong people of Assam, Manipur and Nagaland.
He urged the youth to remain united and work towards realizing her ideals, emphasizing the importance of conveying them to the higher echelons of the Government of India through platforms such as My Home India.
The programme also featured cultural performances, including a traditional dance by the Rongmei Cultural Dance Troupe (Delhi) and musical presentations by Zeliangrong artists. Senior advisors, executives and members of both organisations attended the event, reaffirming their commitment to uphold Rani Gaidinliu’s legacy and work for the unity and welfare of the Zeliangrong people. Numal Dusad, In-charge of Northeast Activities, Delhi & NCR, also spoke at the programme.
In Dimapur, the observance was held at Rongmei Customary Court, Chungaizang Rongmei Colony, Burma Camp on January 26, 2026, organised by Rongmei Women Organisation Dimapur (RWOD). The programme aimed to remember and honour Rani Gaidinliu’s sacrifice and her dedication to the freedom movement and preservation of indigenous faith, culture and identity.
RWOD general secretary, Jessy Phaomei, delivered the welcome note, highlighting the relevance of Rani Gaidinliu’s ideals in contemporary society. RNPO advisor, G. Namgai, delivered the keynote speech, elaborating on her historical role in India’s freedom struggle and her contribution towards safeguarding indigenous traditions and values.
A cultural number was presented by TRC Tangnajeilong, while elders, women leaders, youth and members of the Rongmei community participated in the programme, reaffirming collective respect and admiration for her timeless legacy.
The programme was chaired by RWOD joint secretary, Gaibangliu Gangmei, with invocation by Thailikliu Kamei, and concluded with an acknowledgement by RWOD president, Againa Gonmei.
