The 15th edition of the Lotha Football Championship 2026 was formally kicked off on Wednesday at the Public Ground, Wokha, with ADC Satakha and co-owner of Doyang Strikers FC, Chumlamo Humtsoe, gracing the occasion as the inaugural guest, while chairperson of Wokha Town Council, W. Myingthungo Kikon, attended as the special invitee.
The tournament commenced with Yon Sporting Club registering a convincing victory over Emirates FC. Goals from M. Yongsen, Sentisang, Sachamo Yanthan, and Mhacho sealed the win, while Phyobemo Kithan netted a consolation goal for Emirates FC in the 38th minute.
In the second match of the day, Nyiro Range FC overcame Airfield Colony FC. Jangganglung and Mhao scored for Nyiro Range FC, while Vizo found the target for Airfield Colony FC.
In his address, Humtsoe emphasized the role of sports in fostering discipline, teamwork and unity among youth. He noted that initiatives such as the Nagaland Super League have opened new avenues for local footballers and urged players to remain focused, disciplined and committed while upholding sportsmanship and fair play.
Special invitee Kikon highlighted the importance of values such as perseverance, respect and discipline both on and off the field. He commended the Wokha District Football Association (WDFA) for its consistent efforts in promoting football and nurturing talent in the district.
The programme began with the line-up of participating teams followed by the hoisting of the tournament flag. The inaugural programme was chaired by tournament secretary Amos Odyuo. Pastor Zubenthung Ngullie of PBC Wokha offered the blessing, while WDFA president N. Samuel Ezung delivered the presidential address. An interlude was presented by Emily Murry and the Fair Play Pledge was administered by member of the Technical Committee, Athungo Erui. The ceremony concluded with the official declaration of the championship.
The championship continues on January 29 with three scheduled matches: Flamingo FC will face Old Changsu FC, Star Madrid FC will take on Tsumang FC and Yon Sporting Club will meet Friends Club.
