A day after a poster was purportedly put up in the West Garo Hills district headquarter Tura, by the global terror group ISIS- Khorasan – the so-called Islamic State’s Central and South Asian unit – threatening the indigenous Garo community, Meghalaya Police on Thursday said they have obtained “some leads” on the incident, even as thorough probe is on.
“We have some leads but we cannot divulge them with you now, it will be done at an appropriate time,” Abraham Sangma, the district police chief of West Garo Hills, said.
Describing the poster threat as “very serious”, Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home (Police) Prestone Tynsong said the police has taken necessary steps and if necessary the state would seek help from the central government to identify the people behind the poster threat.
Asked if there are “vested interests” behind the poster threat, Tynsong said, “ I cannot say right now as it is too early to comment anything. The police have started their investigation into the matter. Let us wait for the police investigation.”
Meanwhile, the Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisations (CoMSO) has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to institute a central probe into the poster purportedly put by the global terror group ISIS-K.
“This incident, irrespective of whether it is eventually confirmed as an act of an international terror outfit or a locally orchestrated act of intimidation, constitutes a direct threat to internal security, communal harmony, indigenous rights, and the sovereignty of India,” CoMSO chairman Roykupar Synrem states in a memorandum to the Prime Minister.
“Failure to act decisively will embolden hostile elements and deepen insecurity in a sensitive border region,” Synrem said.
