Nagaland Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on Monday declared that arts, music and literature transcend mere expression, embodying the living soul of Naga society by preserving identity while inspiring communities toward a progressive and harmonious future.
Speaking at the Governor’s Award 2025 ceremony for Arts, Music and Literature at Dr. Imkongliba Ao Hall, Lok Bhavan, Kohima, Bhalla praised the five awardees whose creativity and dedication have enriched the state’s cultural fabric.
He said Nagaland’s extraordinary wealth of traditions, languages, folklore, rhythms and artistic expressions remains deeply rooted in daily life, festivals and oral traditions, preserving the people’s living history.
The Governor emphasized the role of artists, musicians and writers in bridging past and future, enabling society to evolve without losing its roots. He lauded their discipline, originality and commitment to excellence, noting that their contributions inspire younger generations and bring pride to the State. Bhalla added that art speaks beyond words, music transcends boundaries, and literature nurtures conscience, shaping the nation’s moral and intellectual fabric.
He commended scholars documenting indigenous knowledge, folklore and endangered languages, saying such efforts safeguard Naga identity and ancestral wisdom. Congratulating the awardees, Bhalla stressed that excellence stems from perseverance, passion and purpose, and their success sends a strong message to youth that dedication to arts and literature is both noble and nation building. He acknowledged families, mentors and institutions for their support, and urged balanced development where cultural growth complements economic and technological progress.
Secretary of the Department of Art and Culture, Bodeno S. Colo, NCS, presented an overview of the award, instituted in 2003 as one of Nagaland’s most prestigious recognitions. She explained that the transparent selection process begins at the district level under Deputy Commissioners and culminates with recommendations by the State Level Committee chaired by the Chief Secretary Sentiyanger Imchen.
This year’s awards honoured four individuals and one musical group: Mannyei Konyak of Mon for intricate sculpture, Guru Rarenbenba of Mokokchung for lifelong dedication to folk songs and dances, Colored Keys from Chümoukedima for innovative fusion music, Moko Koza of Phek for multilingual rap, and Vishü Rita Krocha for her storytelling in literature.
