Safer Internet Day: Call for safe & responsible use of AI

Safer Internet Day 2026 was observed in Kohima, Dimapur and Zunheboto on February 10, with programmes focusing on the theme “Smart Tech, Safe Choices – Exploring Safe and Responsible Use of AI.” The observance aimed at promoting safe, responsible, and informed use of digital technologies and artificial intelligence (AI).
In Kohima, the National Informatics Centre (NIC) organised a district-level awareness campaign at the DC’s Conference Hall.
Addressing the programme, EAC Kohima, Imtiyenla K, highlighted that Safer Internet Day is celebrated globally on the second Tuesday of February. She highlighted internet as a powerful tool enabling communication, education, healthcare and entrepreneurship, while cautioning against risks such as cyberbullying, misinformation, deepfakes and online fraud. She stressed the need for digital literacy and responsible use of AI. District Informatics Officer, Temsunaro, noted the rise in cyber fraud cases and emphasised awareness as the key to prevention. A presentation by Sozenlo Tep, Network Field Engineer, NIC, detailed cyber threats including phishing, UPI fraud, fake customer care scams, malware, spyware, deepfakes and AI voice frauds, while stressing cyber hygiene practices such as strong passwords, two-factor authentication and cautious use of public Wi-Fi.
In Dimapur, the Office of the Deputy Commissioner organised a district-level awareness programme and workshop at DC’s Conference Hall. ADIO (NIC), Dimapur, Kamal Chetri, spoke on the growing influence of AI in daily life and cautioned against misuse such as fake videos and voice calls. EAC (Dev), Dimapur, Imlijungla Lemtur, in her keynote address, emphasised ethical and responsible use of AI, warning of risks associated with misinformation and data misuse. Presentations by ADIO (NIC), Chümoukedima, Vicky Kumar Sharma, and DIA (NIC), Dimapur, T. Thongtsali Sangtam, highlighted phishing threats and introduced participants to the Government of India’s Sanchar Saathi portal for reporting fraud communications and verifying mobile connections.
In Zunheboto, the event was held at DC’s Conference Hall. Chairperson Dr. L. Chuchong Noklang, EAC, delivered the welcome address, followed by chief guest ADC Tiameren Chang, who stressed the importance of internet safety and responsible digital practices. He cautioned against blind dependence on AI, reminding participants that human judgment must remain paramount. A presentation by Himanshu Ranjan, DIO, NIC, Zunheboto, outlined key aspects of online safety and the evolving role of AI. The programme concluded with vote of thanks by Octoli Chishi, DRM, NIC, Zunheboto.
Across the three districts, the observance highlighted both the opportunities and risks of digital technologies, urging citizens to adopt safe online practices, maintain cyber hygiene, and use AI responsibly. Participants were informed about mechanisms to report cybercrimes through the National Cyber Crime Helpline number 1930, the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (cybercrime.gov.in), or at the nearest police station.
