The Mopungchuket Village Sports Federation (MVSP) on Friday accorded a grand reception to Mongsen Longkumer upon his return to the village after clinching a gold medal at the 5th WAKO India Open International Kickboxing Championship held in New Delhi.
Mongsen Longkumer secured the top honor in the Veteran 84 kg category by defeating Salah Fathi Mohamed Azzazi of Egypt in the final bout, bringing pride to the nation and his community. The championship, organized from February 4 to 8, witnessed participation from more than 3,000 athletes representing 25 countries. WAKO India is recognized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, as well as the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
The victorious athlete was welcomed at the village gate with a dedicated victory song performed by his fellow villagers. A felicitation ceremony followed at the MSM Complex, organized by the MVSP, where community members gathered to honor his achievement. Representatives from the Mokokchung District Martial Arts Association also attended the event, adding to the celebratory atmosphere.
