Rev. Dr. James Thoppil, Bishop of Kohima, presiding over the Eucharist during the Kohima Diocese Youth Leaders Retreat cum Central Executive Council (CEC) Meet 2026 of the Nagaland Catholic Youth Movement (NCYM), called upon youth leaders to remain steadfast in faith, united in mission, and committed to authentic Christian witness. He emphasized that effective leadership must flow from prayer, integrity, and communion with the Church, while urging youth to resolve issues with objective justice rather than group or tribal divisions.
Held from February 13 to 15 at Mount Tabor Retreat House, Kohima, under the theme “Courageous Witness: Living Hope in Christ,” the three-day gathering brought together diocesan youth leaders and CEC members to foster spiritual renewal, strengthen leadership commitment, and discern the future direction of youth ministry.
The inaugural Holy Eucharist was celebrated by Rev. Fr. Kokto Kurian, Diocesan Youth Director, who reminded that leadership is a mission of service, urging youth leaders to pause, listen, and discern before acting. The retreat was animated by Rev. Fr. Thomas SDB, Novice Master, who reflected on Jesus’ servant leadership and the need for leaders to repent and convert like St. Peter.
Resource persons including Dr. Johnny Ruangmei, CAN President, Dr. John Murry, Public Leader, and Mhonbeni Florence addressed the youth leaders on leadership rooted in faith, responsible stewardship, collaborative ministry, and the role of youth as courageous witnesses in today’s Church and society. Daily Eucharistic celebrations and common prayers enriched the retreat with moments of communion.
The CEC Meet provided a platform to review past activities, deliberate on future plans, and strengthen coordination at parish and diocesan levels. Constructive discussions and decisions were made to enhance youth engagement and evangelization efforts.
Altogether, 54 youth leaders representing 24 parishes/centres and four tribal associations participated in the retreat, demonstrating active engagement and responsibility towards youth ministry. The NCYM office expressed appreciation to the resource persons and participants, praying that the fruits of the retreat may continue to strengthen the Diocese’s youth ministry.
