MARCOFED (Dimapur, Nagaland), in collaboration with the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, organized two “Improved Tool Kits Distribution Programmes” for Cane & Bamboo artisans and Wood Craft artisans in Kohima on February 17 and 18, 2026.
The initiative, aimed at strengthening traditional craft sectors, provided modern tool kits to enhance productivity, precision, finishing quality, and market competitiveness. A total of 100 artisans—50 engaged in Cane & Bamboo craft and 50 in Wood Craft—from Kohima and adjoining areas benefitted under the scheme.
On February 18, the Cane & Bamboo programme was graced by Ikeepwang Zeliang, joint secretary, Department of Cooperation, Kohima, as chief guest. In his address, he underscored the importance of Cane & Bamboo craft in Nagaland’s rural economy and cultural identity, appreciating the initiative for empowering artisans with modern tools to improve production capacity and income opportunities.
Managing director of MARCOFED, R. Bendang Ao, expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Textiles for its continued support, noting that upgraded tool kits would reduce manual effort and enable artisans to produce innovative, market-oriented products. Sudipta Das, Handicrafts Promotion Officer, briefed artisans on schemes available for skill upgradation, marketing support, exhibitions, and financial assistance.
On February 17, the Wood Craft programme was held with Bendangla Longkumer, Registrar of RCS, Kohima, as chief guest. She emphasized the need to preserve traditional craftsmanship while adapting to modern tools, highlighting the economic and cultural significance of such initiatives. Padma Shri awardee Neiuhu Sorhie also inspired artisans to uphold the legacy of wood craftsmanship with innovation and dedication.
Beneficiaries from both programmes expressed gratitude to MARCOFED and the sponsoring authority, stating that the improved tool kits would significantly enhance their craftsmanship, productivity, and livelihood prospects.
The programmes concluded with votes of thanks, reaffirming the commitment of MARCOFED and the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, towards the socio-economic empowerment and sustainable development of artisans in Nagaland.
