ECI sets April deadline for e-roll revision in 7 NE states; Assam left out

AGARTALA, FEB 19 (AGENCIES):

The Election Commission of India on Thursday directed Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) of seven North East states including Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura, along with 16 other States and Union Territories, to immediately complete all preparatory work for the upcoming Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, scheduled to begin from April 2026.
According to the letter, ECI had earlier ordered the SIR of electoral rolls through order dated June 24, 2025, covering all States and Union Territories across the country. Subsequently, vide letter dated July 5, 2025, all CEOs, except those of Bihar, were directed to begin pre-revision activities for the exercise.
ECI further announced, through a letter dated October 27, 2025, that the SIR exercise had been initiated in 12 States and Union Territories and is currently underway.
The latest communication makes clear that the SIR in the remaining States and UTs, including the seven North East states, is expected to start from April 2026. Officers have been asked to wrap up all groundwork at the earliest.
It has been learned that the directive was addressed to CEOs across 23 States and UTs and sent via both email and speed post from ECI headquarters.
The Special Intensive Revision is a periodic exercise carried out to update and clean voter rolls, ensuring that eligible voters are registered and inaccuracies in existing records are corrected.
