Documentation on ‘The Living Morung & Traditional Knowledge’

Department of Art & Culture, Government of Nagaland, organised a documentation programme under the theme “The Living Morung and Traditional Knowledge” at Yachem village, Longleng, on February 17 and at Yakor village, Shamator, on February 18.
The programme at Yachem village was graced by VCC Y. Esakumba as special guest and chaired by C. Lenke, ARO. Addressing the gathering, Mapeudibe, DCO Longleng, spoke on the importance of preserving and protecting traditional practices and indigenous knowledge systems amid rapid modernization.
Resource persons C. Longnyu and H. Alemba shared and demonstrated traditional healing practices, giving participants practical exposure. They highlighted the need to safeguard indigenous medicinal knowledge and ensure its transmission to younger generations. The programme witnessed active participation from village elders, traditional knowledge holders, cultural practitioners, students from neighbouring villages and community members, aiming to create awareness and encourage dialogue on revival and preservation of indigenous knowledge.
At Yakor village, the programme was graced by head G.B. J. Kiumukam in the presence of the village council chairman and other frontal organisations. The session was chaired by Kiumukam, assistant curator, while the inaugural address was delivered by Teisovikuolie Therie, deputy director, Department of Art & Culture, Nagaland.
Resource persons included L. Tohanba, S. Yanhola, S. Hanji, S. Perimong, T. Rethsong and Z. Toshila. T. Yurahamong narrated the significance of the Morung, while Shokheamong shared the history of Yakor village. The programme also featured interactive discussions and experience-sharing sessions with youths and elders.
Appreciation certificates were distributed by Teisovikuolie Therie, while the vote of thanks was delivered by Kiumukam. A workshop on Traditional Craft and Weaving was conducted as part of the event, along with cultural performances by Throngtsa Cultural Society and Sangpuntong Cultural Society.
