Operations begins at Guwahati Airport’s new terminal

GUWAHATI, FEB 22 (PTI):

Commercial operations began Sunday at the new terminal of Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBIA) in Guwahati, with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcoming the first batch of passengers.
The terminal was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 20. Marking the launch, a ceremonial boarding pass was issued to the first departing passenger, while an Akasa Air flight from Mumbai became the first arrival at the new facility. Director of Adani Airport Holdings Ltd. (AAHL), Jeet Adani, was present.
Operations followed phased live trials of check-in, baggage handling, security and aircraft turnaround systems. A traditional lamp-lighting ceremony and cultural performances at the arrivals forecourt highlighted Assam’s heritage, with participation from artisan communities, tea garden workers, frontline staff and CISF personnel.
Sarma thanked Gautam Adani for honouring his commitment to invest Rs 50,000 crore, announced during Advantage Assam 2.0, and said the new terminal would boost tourism and serve as a “gamechanger” for the state. He added that the design respectfully reflects Assamese culture.
Jeet Adani said the expansion reflects rising demand and aligns with the Prime Minister’s vision for future-ready infrastructure and the state’s goal of becoming the North East’s economic engine.
Handling over nine million passengers in recent years, LGBIA ranks among India’s 10-12 busiest airports. The airport connects 21 domestic and three international destinations and manages over 130 daily aircraft movements.
