A one-day training programme on cultivation practices of citronella and lemongrass was conducted at Kangstsung Tuli, Mokokchung, on February 21 at Kangstung Students’ Library Hall. The programme was organized under the TRIBES initiative, supported by NABARD and implemented by the Community Educational Centre Society (CECS).
Delivering the introductory address, CECS director Subonenba Longkumer highlighted the objectives of the TRIBES project and emphasized the importance of climate-resilient aromatic crops in strengthening rural livelihoods.
He encouraged farmers to adopt improved cultivation practices and assured continued technical and institutional support under the project.
Resource person Gobin Chauhan, a progressive farmer from Bokajan, Assam, with over 30 years of experience in citronella cultivation, shared detailed insights on land preparation, planting materials, spacing, nutrient management, harvesting techniques, and oil extraction. He also spoke on maintaining crop quality, understanding market demand, and sustaining productivity.
As part of the programme, participants visited a farmer’s lemongrass plot in Kangstung village, where they observed crop growth, discussed plant health and spacing, and clarified practical doubts with the resource person.
Altogether, 72 farmers from Kangstung, Kangtsungyimsen, and Aopenzu attended the training. The programme concluded with a note of appreciation to the resource person and acknowledgement of the active participation of the farmers.
