Western Sumi Youth Front (WSYF) has condemned the incident that took place at Hollohon Petrol Pump, Purana Bazaar, East Dimapur, on February 24, where a Naga individual was allegedly physically assaulted by petrol pump staff over an issue of overcharging and pricing discrepancy raised by the victim.
WSYF president Atokiho Sumi stated that instead of resolving the matter through clarification, four other staff members allegedly ganged up and assaulted the victim, inflicting injuries that required medical attention and first aid.
WSYF stated that while disagreements may arise in business transactions, no individual or group has the right to take the law into their own hands. It termed resorting to collective violence over a consumer dispute as unacceptable and condemnable, stating that such actions endanger lives, public peace and communal harmony. It also appreciated the law enforcing agencies for their timely intervention which deterred further escalation and public unrest.
WSYF expressed concern that individuals who have come to Nagaland to conduct business would engage in such behaviour, stating that respect for the local people, their land and the rule of law was non-negotiable. It said business owners were responsible for the conduct of their staff and must maintain proper work ethics, adding that consumer grievances should be addressed professionally.
WSYF urged a fair and impartial investigation into the matter and appealed to the concerned authorities to take appropriate action as per law. It stated that justice must be delivered in a transparent manner to prevent recurrence of such incidents. WSYF appealed to the public to maintain calm and not allow emotions to override peace and unity, and affirmed its commitment to safeguarding the rights, dignity and security of the people while upholding communal harmony and lawful conduct.
