Department of Higher Education Nagaland (DHE) on Thursday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the India Meteorological Department (IMD), under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, to install one X-Band Polarimetric Doppler Weather Radar (DWR) at Dimapur Government College, Oriental Colony, Dimapur, under the Mission Mausam scheme.
The MoU, vetted and approved by the State government, was signed in the presence of Temjen Imna Along, minister for Higher Education & Tourism; Sarita Yadav secretary, Higher & Technical Education; V. Lovitoly Sema ex-officio director of Higher Education; representatives from IMD; and officials of the department.
Officials said the installation of the Doppler Weather Radar would significantly augment weather forecasting capabilities and strengthen agricultural meteorology services, particularly for the Nagaland region. The initiative is expected to enable improved policy planning and enhance public safety measures aimed at safeguarding lives and property.
The MoU outlines that the institutional cooperation programme between DHE and IMD would focus on advancing understanding in the field of urban meteorology and atmospheric sciences, along with other mutually identified emerging research areas. The collaboration is also expected to improve comprehension of weather hazards specific to Nagaland and contribute to more effective operational weather forecasting.
Officials further informed that IMD and DHE would jointly work towards developing new applications for mutual benefit. The partnership is expected to create opportunities for faculty members and students of higher educational institutions across the state to engage in research, training and knowledge exchange in emerging areas of weather and climate science.
The MoU will come into effect from the date of signing and remain valid for a period of 20 years. It was stated that the agreement may be amended, if required, through joint consultation between IMD and DHE.
Officials described the collaboration as a significant step towards strengthening scientific infrastructure in Nagaland and fostering research and innovation in meteorological sciences for the benefit of the wider community.
