Kohima Press Club (KPC) has written to chief minister Neiphiu Rio urging implementation of a pension scheme for journalists in Nagaland.
In a memorandum dated February 25, 2026, KPC president Alice Yhoshü and general secretary Vishü Rita Krocha reiterated its earlier representation, stating that considering the demanding nature of journalism, a pension scheme was crucial to ensure financial security for journalists in their post-retirement period. It said the move would also acknowledge the vital contributions of the Fourth Estate to society.
KPC pointed out that almost all states, including neighbouring Assam, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and Mizoram, have journalists’ pension schemes in place since the 1990s, with Mizoram being the latest in 2022.
Stating that the directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) has already put up a proposal in this regard as per its earlier representations, KPC appealed to the chief minister to look into the matter with urgency and take necessary action at the earliest. KPC acknowledged and appreciated Rio’s contributions towards the welfare of the press fraternity, including the permanent KPC building under construction in the state capital. However, it said it would be remiss if it failed to raise other growing concerns confronting the media fraternity in Nagaland. The club highlighted the need for periodic enhancement of the operational subsidy provided to journalists accredited under the state government.
It also proposed extension of the Journalists’ Welfare Fund to cover dependents of working journalists to provide vital support to families dependent on journalists’ earnings.
Referring to concerns raised by Mokokchung Press Club over increasing public confusion between professional journalism and unregulated media content, KPC said it shared similar concerns. It expressed deep concern over the rise of unverified social media content creating confusion among news consumers and affecting the profession. The KPC further urged ensuring protocol in matters relating to state government’s official press conferences and events.
