Legal awareness in Mon stresses gender equality, rights protection

Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (NSLSA), in collaboration with Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong (KNSK), organised a Legal Awareness Programme on February 28 at DRDA Resource Centre, Mon Town.
Justice Yarenjungla Longkumer, Judge of Gauhati High Court and Portfolio Judge for Nagaland, graced the occasion as special guest, stated a DIPR report.
Delivering the keynote address, Justice Longkumer emphasized that the strength of a society or nation depends on the status of women. She underscored that gender equality is fundamental to building a strong and developed society, and that it begins within the family. Reflecting on the role of mothers, she said that confidence stems from knowing one’s rights, and urged participants to be aware of their entitlements under the law.
Neiko Akami, member secretary of NSLSA, spoke on the role of Legal Services Authority, noting that the institution is primarily concerned with the welfare of women, children, and persons with disabilities. He highlighted that free and competent legal services are extended to marginalized sections of society to ensure justice and protection.
Ajongba Imchen, registrar of Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench, elaborated on various aspects of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012. Meanwhile, B. Peter Resu, Joint Registrar (Judicial) cum CPC, Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench, highlighted provisions of the Domestic Violence Act, 2005, stressing its importance in safeguarding women against abuse.
KNSK president, Ponglem Konyak, expressed gratitude to the special guest and her team from Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench. She said such awareness programmes are vital for society and urged participants to learn and remain vigilant about their rights.
The programme was chaired by Topha, Panel Lawyer, DLSA Mon. Invocation was pronounced by Mongyeang Konyak, while the vote of thanks was delivered by Wokono Yhoshii, NJS, Chief Judicial Magistrate cum Secretary, DLSA Mon. The event brought together legal experts, community leaders and participants, reinforcing the importance of legal literacy and gender equality in strengthening society.
