Member Secretary of Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (NSLSA), Neiko Akami, along with Mon District Legal Services Authority (Mon DLSA), District and Sessions Judge Mon, Chief Judicial Magistrate Mon, Panel Lawyer DLSA, Assistant LADC and Jail PLV, paid an official visit to Mon District Jail on February 27.
During the visit, Akami addressed and interacted with the inmates, highlighting the importance of legal aid and informing them that free legal services are provided through the Legal Aid Defence Counsel (LADC) system to represent and pursue cases at no cost. He further apprised the inmates that Lok Adalat is organized quarterly to facilitate amicable settlement of cases, including compoundable offences, thereby ensuring timely access to justice.
Speaking on various services under the legal aid scheme, the member secretary emphasized the Victim Compensation Scheme and cited instances where compensation was successfully awarded to victims through Legal Services Authorities. He noted that Mon DLSA had awarded monetary compensation amounting to Rs. 6 lakh to three families in 2025 under the Victim Compensation Scheme, 2012.
Akami also appreciated the Under Trial Review Committee (UTRC) for recommending and facilitating the release of three undertrial inmates, acknowledging the committee’s timely steps. He commended Mon DLSA and LADC for their effective work and encouraged them to continue ensuring access and delivery of justice to all.
Encouraging the inmates, Akami urged them to utilize their time in custody for self-reflection and reformation, stressing the reformative approach and confidence in the justice delivery system.
Following the interaction, he inspected the jail premises and recommended the installation of a European toilet in the female ward to improve basic facilities and sanitation.
