No sovereignty, no integration in accords: Jamir

Staff ReporterDIMAPUR, MAR 4 (NPN)

Former Chief Minister and veteran Naga leader, Dr SC Jamir stated that Government of India had already made its stand clear on key contentious issues on the decade long Naga Political issue, asserting that sovereignty and integration are not found in the final agreement.
Addressing media fraternity on the side-lines of a programme here at Chümoukedima, Dr Jamir noted that Indian Government has said ‘No Integration’ and ‘No Sovereignty’, whilst also adding that the Union Home Minister has said that in India there is only one Prime Minister, one Constitution and one Flag.
“If everything is already concluded, there is nothing left to say” he remarked, adding that the focus now should be on expediting implementation of what has been formally agreed upon.
According to Dr Jamir, sovereignty, constitutional arrangements, flag and other core issues had been thoroughly debated before consensus was reached.
Further describing the Naga political issue as a matter that would determine the future of the Naga people, Dr Jamir said the agreement was the culmination of more than 20 years of discussions and deliberations.
“Every word must have been analysed and examined before they agreed on what was relevant to be included. And in the final agreement, you do not findsovereignty and integration” he reminded.
Meanwhile, responding to queries on the appointment of Ajit Lal as advisor (North East), who will lead the Naga peace talks, Dr. Jamir said the position was akin to that of a Special Officer tasked with overseeing how and when the agreements already reached would be implemented.
He also reminded that AK Mishra had earlier been appointed, not as an Interlocutor but as a Special Officer, to supervise the implementation process.
“The new Advisor’s role is also to see how the two agreements that have been agreed upon can be implemented quickly” he opined, adding that there was no need to “overthink” the appointment.
On recent statement purportedly made by chief minister Dr Neiphiu Rio about many CSOs speaking about the Naga political issue, Dr Jamir said the objective of one of them- “Like-Minded Elders” forum of Nagaland- was to present realities and facts of two agreements signed between the NPGs with the Government of India.
“These formal agreements were duly signed and unanimously decided by the parties concerned” he said, adding that the elders were urging both sides to give sanctity to what had been signed.
When asked on his opinion on the recently signed Frontier Nagaland Territorial Authority (FNTA) agreement, Dr Jamir said the objective behind the formation of the FNTA is to enable the region to “fully bloom” in all aspects, including economically, educationally, socially and politically.
He thereby stated that we want to see that they develop as fast as any other advanced district of the State and the country, adding that the Assembly should not delay in implementing the agreement. “We wish them the best of luck,” he remarked.
