Tribute to Late PA Sangma on his 10th death anniversary

A Decade of Remembrance, A Lifetime of Inspiration

On this solemn occasion of the 10th Death Anniversary of Purno Agitok Sangma, we pause to reflect on the life and legacy of a remarkable son of the Northeast, a national statesman, and the founding father of the National People’s Party.
Ten years have passed since his earthly journey came to an end in 2016, yet his vision, courage, and moral clarity continue to resonate strongly across the political landscape of India—especially in the Northeast. Late Shri P.A. Sangma was not merely a politician; he was an institution in himself. His life story, rising from humble beginnings in the Garo Hills of Meghalaya to becoming the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, stands as a beacon of hope for countless young people from marginalized and tribal communities.
A Leader Rooted in Humility and Integrity
Born into modest circumstances, Shri Sangma understood firsthand the challenges faced by the common people. His political journey was defined not by personal ambition, but by a deep sense of responsibility toward the voiceless and underrepresented. As Speaker of the Lok Sabha, he upheld parliamentary dignity with firmness and impartiality, earning respect across party lines.
Integrity was the hallmark of his leadership. In an era when politics is often questioned for its ethics, P.A. Sangma stood firm on principles. He believed that public life must be guided by transparency, accountability, and service to the people.
The Bible reminds us in Proverbs 29:2, “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice.” Indeed, during his tenure in public office, many found reassurance in his fairness and wisdom.
Visionary Founder of the National People’s Party
In 2013, guided by a conviction that regional aspirations needed a strong and credible national voice, he founded the National People’s Party. His vision was bold: to create a political platform that would defend the constitutional rights of tribal communities, strengthen federalism, and ensure balanced development for neglected regions.
Today, the NPP stands as a testimony to his foresight. What began as a regional aspiration has grown into a recognized national political force. His dream was never about power for its own sake; it was about empowerment—empowerment of the grassroots, of indigenous identity, and of future generations.
For us in NPP Nagaland, his legacy carries special significance. Nagaland, like many parts of the Northeast, has long sought equitable development, transparency in governance, and a politics anchored in values. His life challenges us to rise above petty divisions and work collectively for the welfare of our people.
Champion of the Northeast
P.A. Sangma was among the rare leaders who consistently highlighted the concerns of the Northeast at the national level. He spoke boldly about connectivity, economic development, cultural preservation, and political representation. He believed that the Northeast was not a peripheral region but an integral and vital part of India’s identity and progress.
His voice in Parliament carried not just arguments, but conviction. He represented the aspirations of tribal India with dignity and intellectual depth. In doing so, he inspired an entire generation to believe that leadership from the Northeast could shape national discourse.
A Man of Faith and Conviction
Beyond politics, Late Shri Sangma was a man deeply rooted in faith. His public life reflected values of forgiveness, humility, and perseverance. In times of political adversity, he remained composed and steadfast.
The Scripture in 2 Timothy 4:7 says, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” These words aptly describe his journey—a life well fought, a race honorably completed, and faith steadfastly preserved.
A Call to Renew Commitment
As we mark this 10th anniversary, remembrance must go beyond ceremonial tributes. The true honor we can offer to our founding leader is to live out his ideals in our daily political engagement. Clean governance, internal democracy, respect for constitutional institutions, and unwavering service to the people must remain our guiding principles.
At a time when politics across the country faces skepticism, we must reaffirm our commitment to value-based leadership. Let us strive to build a Nagaland—and a Northeast—that reflects justice, unity, and opportunity for all.
His legacy is not confined to history books. It lives in every NPP worker who chooses service over self-interest, integrity over compromise, and unity over division.
Conclusion
Ten years may have passed, but the vision of Late Shri Purno Agitok Sangma continues to illuminate our path. His life stands as a reminder that leadership is not measured by tenure, but by impact; not by authority, but by character.
On behalf of the National People’s Party, Nagaland, I pay my deepest respect to our founding father. May his noble soul rest in eternal peace, and may his ideals continue to inspire us to build a just, transparent, and progressive society.
