Nagaland State Co-operative Bank Ltd. (NStCB), through its Women Development Cell (WDC), commemorated International Women’s Day 2026 under the theme “Give to Gain” with a programme held on March 6 at its Head Office, Khermahal, Dimapur. Though globally observed on March 8, the bank advanced its celebration to facilitate meaningful participation.
The event was graced by social activist and author, Khekiye K. Sema, IAS (Retd.), as guest of honour. A mini exhibition-cum-fair showcased 31 stalls set up by Self Help Groups (SHGs) and Joint Liability Groups (JLGs) financed by NStCB branches in Dimapur and Chümoukedima, recording sales of Rs. 3,91,400.
In his address, guest of honour Khekiye K. Sema, IAS (Retd.) observed that Naga society has long followed traditions and mindsets inherited from earlier generations. He noted that meaningful change can only come through personal experience and actions that touch people’s hearts.
Khekiye pointed out that historically, women did not hold positions equal to men in decision-making bodies. During the era of headhunting and inter-village conflicts, village councils were composed solely of men, as discussions largely revolved around warfare strategies.
This practice, he said, continued to shape social structures in the name of custom and tradition.
He emphasized that while survival in the past depended on physical strength, progress today is driven by intellect—where men and women are equally capable. Stressing the importance of shared responsibility in family planning and decision-making, he urged women to shed the mindset of remaining subordinate to men. He said, times have changed, and women are excelling in many fields. He encouraged them to use their abilities and intellect to support families and society, while also demanding equal recognition.
Highlighting the Village Development Board (VDB) system, Khekiye reminded that at least one member must be a woman and that 25 percent of the VDB grant is reserved exclusively for women. He encouraged SHGs to approach the VDB, understand fund allocation, and ensure resources are used productively. He urged women to ask questions, seek information, and better understand their rights and opportunities.
Khekiye further advised the bank to extend awareness in rural areas so women could strengthen and expand SHGs. He stressed that banks should proactively visit villages, share information on schemes, and encourage more SHGs to access loans for productive activities. Addressing the bank, he noted that while villagers are capable of producing crops, marketing remains a challenge. He suggested guiding farmers on suitable crops, establishing marketing networks, and exploring facilities such as cold storage to reduce post-harvest losses.
He concluded by urging women to believe in themselves, stand up for their rights, and take responsibility in a society that has greatly changed since the time of their ancestors.
Delivering the keynote, AGM Vahjakim said the exhibition-cum-fair was organised by the Women Development Cell of NStCB to celebrate womanhood and commemorate International Women’s Day. Referring to the theme “Give to Gain”, she said the day highlights generosity, collaboration and shared progress while recognising women’s resilience. She noted that although women are making strides as leaders and professionals, there is still a long journey ahead. Educating a woman, she emphasized, means educating a nation, urging women to give their best for a sustainable future.
In his exhortation, MD Jonah Sema reminded that International Women’s Day is not merely a celebration but an occasion to honour women who inspire across history. He cited the example of Malala Yousafzai, who bravely fought for girls’ education under Taliban rule and continues to champion education worldwide through the Malala Fund.
He also recalled the role of the Nagaland Mothers’ Association, which worked for the welfare of the state after statehood. Their courageous interventions during insurgency and factional conflicts gave women a voice in society, eventually leading to representation in the Nagaland Legislative Assembly. He highlighted their strong stand against drugs and alcohol as an enduring contribution.
Other highlights included felicitation of dignitaries by WDC president Basanti Ao, speeches by GM (Credit & Recovery) Vimhazo K. Disong and SHG member Vechipralu Lotha, who shared her success story.
Earlier, the programme was chaired by manager Thungchano Mozhui, with invocation by sr. manager Vechizolu Khusoh, welcome address by accountant M Moiwang Nekong, and vote of thanks by Accountant Vilabeinuo V. Dzuvichu. Altogether, 90 SHGs and JLGs participated in the International Women’s Day programme.
