Top rebel leader surrender in Mnp

A top leader of a proscribed armed group surrendered to the police, said Manipur police in its daily law and order update on Friday.
The surrendered top leader of the United People’s Party of Kangleipak (UPPK) was identified as Moirangthem Raja Singh alias Maiba (41) of Ngangkha Lawai Awang Leikai in Bishnupur district,
He is a self-styled captain of the proscribed outfit and surrendered at the Minuthong office of the Imphal West Commando on Thursday, the police said.
At the time of his surrender, he was carrying a mobile phone and an Aadhaar card. The police said that following the surrender, he was formally arrested.
Notably, he was probably the first cadre of an armed group surrendered in Manipur since the outbreak of the violence crisis in May 2023. A month before the outbreak of the violence, on April 21, as many as 37 militants surrendered and laid down their arms before the then chief minister N Biren Singh in Imphal.
Of the 37 militants, 36 belonged to the Chin Kuki Liberation Army (CKLA) and one was from the PREPAK (PRO).
The UPPK is one of the major rebel armed groups resorting to armed struggle for sovereignty of the erstwhile Manipur kingdom.
It was set up on November 6, 2008, by a splinter faction of PREPAK (People Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak).
