ASMITA Fit India event held in Mokokchung

DIMAPUR, MAR 8 (NPN):

Mokokchung Athletics, in collaboration with MY Bharat, organised the My Bharat–ASMITA Fit India sporting event at Imkongmeren Sports Complex, Mokokchung, on March 7 to commemorate International Women’s Day 2026.
The programme, conducted under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports through the Sports Authority of India and MY Bharat, is part of the Government of India’s ‘Sports for Women’ initiative, ASMITA (Achieving Sports Milestone by Inspiring Women Through Action).
Project Director, DRDA Mokokchung, Imyapangla, graced the opening programme as special invitee. In her address, she said ASMITA seeks to encourage women and girls to participate in sports, build confidence and lead healthier lives. She emphasised that sports are not only about winning medals but also about building character, resilience and teamwork.
Highlighting the participation of young athletes in track and field events, she noted that such competitions reflect the determination and progress of women, while ASMITA leagues across India have already engaged large numbers of girls. She added that Nagaland has long recognised the strength of women, and platforms like ASMITA could nurture future state, national or Olympic athletes.
The closing programme was attended by Martoshi Jamir, vice-president of Mokokchung District Sports Council (MDSC), who presented certificates to winners. He encouraged youth to explore opportunities beyond government jobs, including sports and skill-based careers.
The competition featured track events—100m, 200m and 400m—and field events—shot put and long jump—across three age categories: Under 13, 13–18 years and above 18 years. Age verification was carried out through Aadhaar cards. Though up to 128 participants per event were permitted, only around 25 athletes turned up.
In the Under 13 category, Moabenla emerged winner in both the 100m and 200m races. In the 13–18 years category, Noksupongla Jamir secured first place in the 200m, followed by Imjungbenla Walling and Imnasenla Pongen. Imjungbenla Walling won the 400m ahead of Tiasenla and Imlijungla Jamir, and also claimed the 100m title, with Noksupongla Jamir and Imnasenla Pongen finishing second and third respectively. In the field events, Tiasenla won the shot put with a throw of 7.71m, while Merentula and Bendangsenla T. Sangtam took second and third positions. Merentula also won the long jump with 3.14m, followed by Ushijem T Longkumer and Imjapokla.
In the 18 years and above category, Lanukokla won the 100m race ahead of Sentibenla Jamir and H. Angip Konyak, and also secured first place in the 200m, with Imkongkumla and Rongsenungla finishing second and third. Imkongkumla won the 400m, followed by Sentibenla Jamir and Chonglem P. In the shot put, H. Angip Konyak claimed victory with a throw of 8.49m, while Lanukokla and Masamongla finished second and third. Watilemla won the long jump with 2.76m, followed by H. Angip Konyak and Ngoilih Konyak.
Certificates and medals were awarded to winners during the closing ceremony. Organisers noted the low turnout of women participants and expressed hope for greater participation in future events.
