Abhijit Saikia, a Trained Graduate Teacher (Mathematics) at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Chukitong, who had been missing since February 8, was found dead in a decomposed state on March 7.
Police said the body was discovered by hunters around 11 am on Saturday in the Jayim River, locally known as Juthum Erü (Three Rivers), between N. Longidan village and Mungya village, about 10 km from the school. The body was later identified as Saikia. Additional SP Wokha Biren Lotha said the river terrain is extremely dangerous, with shallow gorges and steep cliffs, making retrieval difficult. He added that Saikia may have slipped and drowned. After completion of legal formalities, the body was handed over to the family on Saturday night.
Saikia’s disappearance on February 8 had triggered search operations by the local community and police. Chukitong Range Public Organisation, along with village leaders, students and youth groups, conducted a search on February 12, followed by a police-led operation the next day before it was later suspended.
