India cricket team created history by defeating New Zealand by 96 runs in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday.
With the victory, India became the first nation to successfully defend the T20 World Cup title and lifted their third crown, moving ahead of two-time champions West Indies and England cricket team to become the most successful team in the tournament’s history.
After New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner won the toss and opted to bowl, India made a cautious start before Abhishek and Samson launched an aggressive assault. India raced to 92/0 in six overs– the joint-highest powerplay score in T20 World Cup history.
Powered by a blistering 46-ball 89 from Sanju Samson and quick fire fifties by Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan, India posted 255/5– the highest total ever in a T20 World Cup final.
In reply, New Zealand were bowled out for 159, with Jasprit Bumrah (4/15) and Axar Patel (3/27) leading the bowling attack.
PM congratulates: Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the team, saying the triumph reflected exceptional skill, determination and teamwork throughout the tournament.
