NBCC Sports Festival 2026 from Mar 24

Staff ReporterDIMAPUR, MAR 9 (NPN):

Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) Youth Department has announced that the NBCC Sports Festival 2026 will be held from March 24 to 27 at the Nagaland Police Complex, Chümoukedima, under the theme “Pray, Play, Proclaim.”
Speaking at a press conference, NBCC Youth Secretary Rev. N. Suhuto Chishi said the festival is part of the council’s Sports and Scripture Engagement (SSE) ministry, which seeks to disciple and engage young people through sports, recreation and small-group Bible studies. Around 20 associations under NBCC are expected to participate.
Rev. Chishi explained that the initiative aims to strengthen the faith of young Christians while reaching out to youth drifting away from regular church activities. Over the years, the department has conducted SSE training, mentor training, sports chaplain training, and Bible study workshops for youth leaders. Recently, it also organised an AIFF D-License coaching course in collaboration with the Nagaland Football Association to promote grassroots football and professionalism in church-based sports.
“This sports festival is the culmination of several years of preparation and ministry through sports. Through this programme, we hope to set a model for sports ministry in Churches,” Rev. Chishi stated.
On funding, he informed that the event is largely organised by the NBCC Youth Department, with participating associations supporting their teams. The organising committee’s budget stands at Rs. 17 lakh, while teams will bear their own expenses. Accommodation will be managed by respective associations, with several churches offering guest houses and community buildings.
Highlighting the relevance of sports ministry in addressing substance abuse, Rev. Chishi said sports help youth remain health-conscious while nurturing a personal relationship with God. He also revealed plans to establish an NBCC Sports Centre in Kohima, featuring a futsal turf, gym, trained coaches, chaplaincy and counselling facilities.
Festival convener Joseph Sumi, Assistant Commandant and Sports Officer, Nagaland Police, informed that 20 teams will compete in men’s football and women’s volleyball. Teams will be divided into four groups, with league matches leading to semi-finals. Associate Pastor Toshi Longkumer added that over 800 youth participants are expected, with devotional sessions and chaplaincy activities complementing the sporting events.
Media in-charge Colo Mero said matches will be held across four grounds within the Police Complex and invited sports enthusiasts to attend. He announced the release of the festival’s theme song “Pray, Play, Proclaim” on the NBCC Ministry YouTube channel, with updates to be shared via social media.
The organisers expressed gratitude to DGP Rupin Sharma, DIG Border Imnatemsu, DIG Training James Kinghen, and Director of Youth Resources and Sports Kethosituo Sekhose for their support in facilitating the event.
