Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) working president, P.N. Syiem has resigned from the party, blaming the Central leadership of not listening to the opinions and aspirations of the people to change the party leadership and revamp the party’s organisation in the state.
In his resignation letter submitted to Congress General Secretary (Organisation), K.C. Venugopal, Syiem said, “after waiting extensively for the AICC leadership to act and respond to the opinions and aspirations of the people of Meghalaya, regarding the change of party leadership in the state, and revamp the party organisation at the state up to the primary unit level, but it has become clear that the central leadership at the high command is more focused on criticising the central government rather than listening to the vital opinions of its own members and the public.”
“Therefore, in accordance with the voices of the people of Meghalaya and most importantly, my own conscience, I hereby tender my resignation from the post of Working President of the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee and from my primary membership in the Indian National Congress effectively from March 10, 2026,” Syiem stated in the letter.
Syiem’s political career was marked by frequent revolt against the Congress leadership between 2013 and 2018 at that time when Dr Mukul Sangma was the Chief Minister.
Disagreeing with the party, Syiem left the Congress and floated his own regional party People’s Democratic Front (PDF) in 2018.
Failing to win the 2018 Assembly elections from Mawsynram constituency, Syiem later abandoned the PDF and resigned as its chairman by joining the National People’s Party (NPP) in 2019.
However, in no time, Syiem revolted against the NPP leadership, after which, he returned to the Congress in 2021.
Which party Syiem will join only time will tell, but from all indications, the former MLA of Mawsynram is likely to join the BJP after abandoning the grand old party.
